Description

The Antarctic is a place of mystery for many, with few humans ever setting foot on the seventh and least explored continent. Still, scientists are determined to learn all they can about this mysterious (and chilly) place at the bottom of the globe. Follow a team of scientists to get a taste of what research teams face as they explore the often-subzero environment in Antarctica. Though humans are few, there are some examples of wildlife in this white wonderland, including fish who are uniquely adapted to survive in the freezing waters.

Suggested Teaching Methods:

1. Pair students to watch and answer questions together.

2. Watch the video as a class, then assign questions as a follow-up activity.

3. Assign each student a question(s) to answer and share.

4. Use as a lesson plan for a substitute teacher.

5. Utilize as an extra credit or homework activity for a related topic lesson.

Student Outcomes:

1. Students will explore an Antarctic research expedition.

2. Students will determine the impact of climate and weather on research efforts.

3. Students will consider the impact of climate change on fish species.

This lesson includes a cover page, a link to a Science in the Extremes YouTube video (4:48), student response questions, an answer key, and an extension activity.

Format:

– Fillable PDF for the paperless classroom, also printable.

– Short answer and short essay questions
